Artist Profile

Howard Ramsden

Howard is a fine art photographer specializing in natural landscapes, historic architecture, and Native American rock art.

When Howard was eleven years old, he spotted an ad in Boys’ Life Magazine that offered prizes in exchange for selling Christmas cards. He jumped at the challenge and was delighted when his entrepreneurial efforts netted him a coveted box camera, which launched a lifetime avocation for him.

Howard currently shoots with a variety of camera equipment, including large format, medium format and digital SLR. Yes, he still shoots with film. He is equally comfortable in both the wet darkroom and digital darkroom. He also makes prints using alternative processes developed in the 1800s and early 1900s. His favorite alternative processes include Van Dyke and platinum-palladium prints.

Since his retirement in 2004, Howard is able to spend more time following his passion of photography. His favorite places to photograph include Death Valley, Mojave Desert, Yosemite backcountry, and the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
